“Beauty and Consolation”, Discovery Awards at the Encontros da Imagem, International Photography Festival in Braga

Exhibition: 21. September – 28. October 2018

Opening Weekend: 21, 22, and 23rd September 2018

“Beauty and Consolation”

The human condition is defined by its limitations and dissatisfactions.  Faced with the bewilderment of the world, humans search for the meaning of existence in pursuit of peace and harmony.  We live in an incessant search, trying to find solace for our pain and suffering. We are obsessed with happiness and pleasure but struggle to find consolation.

Could it be that our reconciliation with the world can be done through the contemplation of the aesthetic. Could Beauty be our salvation? Thomas Zika is presenting prints from his series „drama queens“.

Encontros da Imagem, proposes a reflection on “Beauty and Consolation”. The 2018 edition will take place from the 21st of September to the 28th of October, 2018.

Professionele Fotografie – Dutch Magazine

July 2018

The dutch magazine „professional photography“ 06 is publishing an interview with me and images of the series „somnambule flowers“, which are shown on the occasion of the Noorderlicht Festival with the focus „IN VIVO – the nature of nature“.

“IN VIVO / the nature of nature”, Noorderlicht Photofestival, Museum Belvedere, Heerenveen, Netherlands

Exhibition: 23. June – 23. September 2018

Opening: Saturday, 23rd June 2018, 16.pm

IN VIVO, the 25th Noorderlicht International Photofestival, is about our ambiguous relationship with nature. Museum Bélvédère in Heerenveen becomes the setting for photographic art possessing a confrontational beauty, images inspired by our rich tradition of experiencing nature. IN VIVO will be a modern, threedimensional nature scrapbook with a twist, about how our loving way of experiencing nature is directed by hidden social and cultural constructions.

Noorderlichts aims to raise awareness in its audience about the fact that our natural environment, from intimate back gardens to remote regions, is radically affected, or even created from scratch, by ourselves. IN VIVO challenges and enables the viewer to look in another, probing manner at the living eperiment we call nature. In this curated group show some works from my latest series „somnambule flowers“ are presented.
